Great Basin National Park

Great Basin NP is located in northern Nevada, just over the border from Utah. Wheeler Peak (seen here)- a 13,063 foot mountain in the Snake Range, is its centerpiece. The Great Basin Region- of which Great Basin National Park is only a small part, covers most of Nevada and portions of the bordering states. Its is called the "Great Basin" because there are no streams, or rivers leading out of the region to drain rainfall into the sea. Despite this, it is an arid desert. Only the higher slopes of the mountain ranges that run in strips across the desert provide a more hospitable habitat. The cooler and wetter climate of these mountian slopes are islands of green in the ocean of desert. For more photos, and information go to the Great Basin Page
